Anyway here's a photo from last night's show (Mon 1 Dec)

I've always been a big fan of post-apocalypse fiction since reading Roger Zelazny's Damnation Alley (1967) when I was a kid. In that book a prisoner, Hell Tanner, is offered a full pardon if he agrees to drive a plague vaccine across the radioactive wasteland between Los Angeles and Boston. He is terrorized by various gangs of bikers and marauders in his attempt to deliver the vaccine, and picks up a girl, Cordelia on the way. Things don't turn out well for Hell Tanner.

In many ways The Last Of Us revisits this plot, via contemporary influences such as The Road, The Walking Dead and Children Of Men. Our hero, Joel, embarks on a journey through a devastated United States, charged with delivering a young girl, Ellie, to a medical unit in Salt Lake City. Ellie, we find out, is immune to a fungal plague that has transformed the infected into flesh eating zombies and can provide a vaccine that will save millions of lives.

For me, The Last Of Us is the perfect game, with incredible graphics, the most brutal combat sequences since Manhunt, and most of all an incredibly well thought-out story arc that show the characters really developing throughout the 15 or so hours of gameplay. Naughty Dog have created a masterpiece in The Last Of Us, and it really is the most immersive and emotional game I've ever played.

Going through my office I found some videos and photos of my first band SIRENS, who formed in Exeter in 1986. The indie scene was pretty sparse in those days, with the only other band I can remember being THE VISITORS who put out a flexi disc for the brilliant Bristol fanzine of the time Are you Scared To Get Happy? We had our on single out The End, My Dear which was financed by Dave Henderson who ran Henderson's Records in an arcade called Mr Bumblebees Bazaar, on Fore Street (later he moved the shop to the Real McCoy Arcade).

Sirens first guitarist was Emma Mitchell (in the photo). The guitarist in the video below is Lisa Cole who also played in her own band Southside.

A few promoters were doing indie nights in Exeter at the time; The Big Chill put on bands like The Wolfhounds and Mighty Mighty, who we supported, and there were other notable shows such as Primal Scream, Loop, the Charlatans, The Flatmates and Spacemen 3. Our first show was actually supporting The Shamen in a club on Union Street in Plymouth, called Aliens!

James from Timepiece did a night called Aural Hexen and Ben Ballin put on the Wedding Present in Boxes (posters below)

Before we opened the Cavern - around 1988/89 - a group of us formed a collective called Hometown Atrocities, with the loose aim of bringing a load of punk and hardcore bands to Exeter.

I was in a band at the time with Martin Edmunds called Mad At The Sun, and we put on a bunch of shows including, Fugazi, Verbal Assault, Sink, Victim's Family, Cowboy Killers and Senseless Things. The first hometown Atrocities show was at The Art College, with skate ramps put up in the bar (it was before the days of health & safety!)

There were no real venues so we set up in various pubs around town, usually for only one show, sometimes only half a show if the pub landlord managed to pull the plug on it, like they did at The Printers Pie (now called The Monkey Suit) when the irate landlady walked in halfway through a Cowboy Killers set. One show that did go ahead there featured a band called Headless Chickens who had Thom Yorke from Radiohead on guitar. (Thom was at the art college and was also part of the Hometown Atrocities collective). You can see a photo of that show below - the other guys in the pic are John Matthias and Shack who now DJs under the name Elite Force.

We went on to put out a couple of EPs with Exeter bands including The Hometown Atrocities EP which now fetches a high price amongst collectors due to the fact it is the first recording with Thom Yorke on it.

Recently, IAN GLASPER featured Mad At The Sun, Wordbug and Annalise in his quadrilogy of books about the Eighties/Nineties Uk Punk Scene - Burning Britain, The Day The Country Died, Trapped In A Scene and Armed With Anger. Those books contain everything you need to know about the underground scene from 1980-1999.

In December 2012 we drove over to Berlin to film a video for THE COMPUTER's single DISCO SUCKS. What an amazing place Berlin is. Filming there was hassle free... the band set up along the Berlin wall, on the Tube, and even managed to do a shoot in front of the Brandenburg Gate, without once being told to move on. (Imagine how quickly you'd be shut down if you started filming in Princesshay!)

Carl Shanahan shot the video on a Canon 7D with a crew of just one - me! It was bitterly cold and the poor bastard forgot his gloves. I think he did a pretty good job though....
There were a few shots that didn't make the cut including some in the amazing Ramones Museum which is situated on Krausnickstrase 23. I found this video of my old band WORDBUG playing live in someone's back garden in Belgium back in the early 90's (around the time the Cavern first started). It was a weird gig - I don't now much about Belgian licensing laws but it appeared as if some kid had turned his terraced house into a pub, with bands on in the back garden! It was a proper bar with ale on draught, bar staff, spirits on optics etc.
We were touring Europe with a Belgian band called BYETAIL, playing squats and anti fascist benefits and generally having a great time. The photos are when Craigy was still in the band, the vid is around the time we were changing into ANNALISE, with Tripey on guitar....
Been busy doing a load of work for Exeter punk and roll band THE COMPUTERS this month. Their new single (released on 7" White vinyl) is out on the Cavern's 20th Anniversary MON FEB 14th and looks like its going to do very well indeed! The band have just signed to One Little Indian (home of Bjork and Dan Sartain among others).
Just before Christmas we filmed a video for GROUP IDENTITY down in Kingsbridge at Aiden's Nan's house! The video was shot and edited by CARL SHANAHAN on a bitterly snowy day. It was that week when Devon ground to a halt with snow blocking all but the main roads, and it was so cold that the batteries to my camera drained in about 5 minutes when we went outside to take some stills.
Fair play to Aiden's Nan for letting us use the house though - the footage is actually of a real gig and a number of shelves came down with ornaments everywhere!
I met Ronnie, the original Cavern manager, through her band FRANTIC SPIDERS, Exeter's first and best 'Riot Grrl" band.
They had been making a name for themselves supporting the likes of Huggy Bear and The Voodoo Queens around the UK, and were on this occasion playing with us at Exeter Art College.
I was at the bar when Ronnie walked past carrying a ridiculously tall tower of glasses.
“Can you drink up please mate!” she barked at a frightened looking student in John Lennon glasses and a Doctor Who scarf, snatching his half-finished drink and adding it to to the top of her large stack.

When I got back to our van it was so full of empties you couldn’t fit in the amps.
“Somebody said you were opening a pub.” Ronnie explained. “I thought you could do with some glasses!”
They had collected about 400 of them.
“Hey, do you want to be bar manager?” I asked her, while the hapless Art College dudes walked around scratching their heads, looking for something to put in the dishwasher.

The Frantic Spiders had been played on the John Peel Show, and got ‘Single of The Week’ in Melody Maker for their “You’re dead” 7” single. They were on the verge of being signed to Elastica’s label before they went their separate ways.
Singer Charlie went on to playing in Spy 51 and Gay Dad, and Ronnie started here ultraviolent industrial noise band TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROME.

TSS were a band that really tapped into the raw emotions of life, with Ronnie’s onstage personas, such as the bloodsplattered Psycho Surgeon, really acting as a protective buffer between band and audience. By that I mean the Personas protected the audience from the true content of Ronnie’s songs!
She is a great writer, and went on from TSS to become reviews editor for Rocksound.
I found this battered, never-before-seen, video we made for Toxic Shock Syndrome in the early 90s.
KING LUDD on Fore Street was a great bookshop. For a couple of years it was THE place to go for rarities and books by Burroughs, Kerouac all that sort of stuff. It was killed off when Oxfam opened it's South Street bookstore - how could you cope with a shop that survived on donations when you had to buy all your stock in. Day in, day out John must have heard the 'I get all my stuff from Amazon' mantra from people sitting there bugging him on that chair by the counter with a free cup of tea!
One day we went in there to make a little film with writer Stewart Home (author of Cranked Up really High, Suspect Device and 1001 Things To Do With A Dead Princess).

I've got some videos somewhere of Stewart doing a mad spoken word performance at the Cavern. He'd been invited down by artist Fiona Symes to do a reading at the Art College. (N/B this true story won't mean anything to those under the age of 25)
Walking round the corner toward my house I heard a strangely familiar voice shout "Eh Tommy, I can't get this piggin' thing out of the car on me own can I?"
I'd come home to get a couple of spare cables from my house for the show we had on that night (Lapsus Linguae and Kids Near Water), and in my drive, no word of a lie were 70's comedy duo CANON AND BALL unloading some boxes!
I gave Bobby Ball a chin up nod and went into my house where Clare was watching TV.
"You'll never guess who Ally (our dog) just attacked outside on the road." She said.
"Yeah I saw them - Canon and Ball."
"No - it was Little and Large." She replied.
"No its definitely Canon and Ball." I contested.
"But I saw Lttle". She said
I grabbed the cables and went back to the club : outside, Syd Little was standing by the car, late afternoon sun glinting off his thick glasses.
Dunno where Large was.

For people who were born in the 90s here's Little and Large with Adam Ant on their show.
It turns out we were the first UK punk band who ever played there (most bands stopped off at nearby Singapore where the fees were higher.) NAPALM DEATH were the second band to come to Malaysia. The scene in KL was great - helped a lot by a guy called Joe Kidd who played in a band called The Shitworkers which is the name Maximum Rock 'n' Roll - the punk zine he wrote for - called it's correspondents.
Malaysian kids are really into street punk and hardcore and we played some mental shows there. This one was in a restaurant that Joe Kidd had somehow managed to book out. Crowd surfers were getting seriously close to those massive ceiling fans!
We'd been drinking mini bottles of Oliver And Greg's Sauvignon Blanc*, and eventually got around to the profound idea that 'The Governments don't run the world, The Banks do!'
Dave Myers was on double Vodka and Red Bull, and was well up for fucking the system. Simeon was bent over thumping the bartop with the heel of his fist at the outrage of it all. "Obama, Hilary Clinton - I don't give a shit who's in the White House - they're all puppets of the Multinational Corporations!" Ever had this conversation at 2.30 in the morning, three sheets to the wind - I bet you have!

The Silver Apples show tonight was an important one ... if you know your rock and roll history.
Formed in 1967 the music of Simeon Coxe and drummer Danny Taylor not only pre-dated and informed Krautrock bands like NEU, but also directly influenced punkrock and hip hop. "Sid Vicious told me" Simeon said "that the Sex Pistols always played Silver Apples in the dressing room before going onstage."

Danny died in 2005 but Simeon keeps those amazing beats alive on loops he plays alongside his infamous oscillators. The songs are breathtakingly beautiful, and you can see why his fans include Blur, Sonic Youth, Devo and James Lavelle. The 1960's scene must have been astounded to hear such sounds coming out of a table full of vintage electronics...

We got lucky tonight actually, because all Simeon's gear is powered off a 110 supply and needs a step-down converter to fit The Cavern's 240v plug sockets.
I got one for £14.99 in Maplins, but the kid said "It should be fine so long as you're not running musical equipment off it."
It lasted exactly 52 minutes before burning out - but that was alright - Simeon didn't want to do an encore anyway!
TESCO METRO are selling the new CLASH OF THE TITANS DVD for £10, but I'm not sure it will be better than the 1981 original... and it definitely will not be better than the 1963 epic JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS, which contains that unforgettable battle between skeletons and argonauts. (After Jason kills the many headed HYDRA and steals the Golden Fleece, evil Aeëtes scatters the Hydra's teeth into the soil and prays to the godddes Hacate, whereby the army of dead warriors arise.) That scene looks cool even by today's standards, and was the work of special effects genius RAY HARRYHAUSEN, who integrated stop motion effects with live action, in a technique he termed 'Dynamation'.
When Annalise were touring Asia in 2000 I met Harryhausen in the coolest ever video store, TRASH VIDEO in Brisbane, where he was doing a Q&A and signing photos. It was a big deal to me because his films had been a major part of my childhood (I opted to be Harryhausen in a school debate about the most significant characters in history - beating Louis Pasteur in the final!)
Today Harryhausen is in his 90's and lives in the UK.
He founded the legendary Aylesbury venue FRIARS, and correspondent for a cool punk zine of the time called ZIGZAG. He was a big influence on a bunch of us who eventually got into music: in his class were SEAN FORBES (the lead singer of Wat Tyler, who set up the label Rugger Bugger); GRAEME FLYNN (bass player for garage punk bands BLACK MOSES and PENTHOUSE); and also a guy called ROB STRINGER - who became chairman and CEO of SONY BMG and just paid £250 Million for Jacko's back catalogue.
Robin Pike also taught KRIS NEEDS (singer of the Vice Creams and established punk writer) and TED COCKLE, MD of Island Records.
Understandably, she was extremely nervous! Anyway, I guess that makes this shot the first ever live photo of La Roux as well....
I think it was in 2006, maybe with the Cribs supporting. Zooming in on the set list I can see they played: NA NA NA NA NAA, EVERY DAY I LOVE YOU LESS AND LESS, BORN TO BE A DANCER, CAROLINE YES, I PREDICT A RIOT, MODERN WAY, OH MY GOD, SATURDAY NIGHT. Drop me an email if you can remember who else played this show! exetercavern@hotmail.com
"I was waiting outside the other night and I heard the Toyah covers act you had on." The guy from Call Cars said, as his meter ticked over. "She sounded quite like her."
"No that WAS Toyah!" I replied, getting into the car.
"What THE Toyah, the taxi driver scoffed. "In the Cavern?"
I think he thought it was the Australian Toyah or something, because the Toyah Willcox he knew was a massive star, the LADY GAGA of the 80's, with a bunch of international hit singles like Be Proud, Be Loud (Be Heard) and Brave new World.
There's no way she'd play in a 200 capacity place like this.
Well he was wrong, because she in fact played two dates at the Cavern: 25/10/93 and 10/11/93.
She brought a bunch of young lads from her home town of Salisbury as a backing band.
Its funny how you stumble upon a book that changes the way you think about things. In 1982 I had a dream in which I was reading a book called Cosmic Trigger by Robert Anton Wilson. I didn't have that book, but I guess I must have seen the cover somewhere, because it was really vivid in my dream.
At the time I was studying Foundation Art at North Devon College in Barnstaple, and I used to catch an early bus into town before my lectures started at 10am. I was killing some time in Barnstaple Pannier Market flicking through some piles of books, when I spotted a copy of Cosmic Trigger, the book from my dream. Seeing it was actually quite shocking, and I immediately bought it.

Cosmic Trigger introduced me to many things that tied in with the sort of music I was into at the time, like Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV. It got me reading further books by the likes of Crowley, Jack Parsons, Gurdjieff, William Burroughs, Wilhelm Reich and Timothy Leary. I was saddened when Wilson died in difficult circumstances in 2007, because his books had molded my reality.

Today I found that book walking back from Sidwell Cycles where I was getting the horizontal dropout fixed on my Santa Cruz. It was in the charity shop opposite Poundland, and weirdly enough I'd just been thinking about Robert Anton Wilson and the influence his work had on me.

Incidentally, someone had written 6 lottery numbers on the inside cover ; 3, 5 11 16 21 26. If they ever come up it will be the ultimate reinforcement of Wilson's notion 'that "reality" is always plural and mutable'...THE CAVERNhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15720722299644502028noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7826744809443675074.post-62461652004899341422010-07-14T17:03:00.000-07:002010-07-14T17:08:49.628-07:00DIETER MUH - EXETER INDUSTRIALISTS

Exeter experimental duo DIETER MUH recently turned into a solo project for Steve Cammack.... he's supporting the seminal SILVER APPLES at the Cavern on Tuesday 3rd August. Last time they played here was over a year ago - they were supported by SIMON EGAN who's set comprised putting the sound of himself ironing bacon through the PA! I vaguely remember DIETER MUH being none to pleased (they were vegetarians.) DJ Bacon's Nan was also none too pleased - the ironing board was hers and he took it back smelling like Dewhurst's wheely bin.
It now sells for over £100 on collector's sites, with the 'rare Kylie sleeve' going for even more.
Incidentally, the rare sleeve came about when we lost a batch of the proper ones and made do with some overprinted back pages from The Exeter Flying Post, which was advertising the Ep. I can't remember why I called it "Disgrace To The Corpse Of Kylie".THE CAVERNhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15720722299644502028noreply@blogger.com1
